Spending time with dementia patients- no photos

Two members of the Rotary Club of Calcutta Jadavpur (RCCJ) conducted a specialised community outreach visit to Sriti Sudha, a dedicated daycare centre for elderly individuals living with dementia, run by the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), Calcutta Chapter. Our members spent quality time engaging with the residents, fostering emotional connections, and actively participating alongside them in a scheduled dance therapy session. One of our members performed a dance to actively engage the elderly residents. This hands-on involvement supported the centres holistic therapeutic interventions, which use rhythm and movement to stimulate cognitive function and enhance emotional well-being. To respect patient privacy and maintain strict dignity of care, no photographs were taken, keeping the focus entirely on compassionate, meaningful presence.

Cooking competition,assessment & award ceremony

Our Rotary Club of Calcutta Jadavpur witnessed and judged a unique and educational nutrition competition at Santoshpur Rishi Aurobindo Balika Vidyalaya on October 31, 2025. Girls from four different houses prepared traditional dishes like dudh puli, dahi vada, ghughni, and payesh, and then expertly explained the nutritional value of each to us. The students knowledge and culinary skills were exceptional, making the final ranking extremely difficult. Our club acknowledges Headmistress Sarbani Sen for actively mentoring the children. The event was highly engaging, and all six Rotarians present enjoyed the day, confirming the projects success in promoting holistic education."

A team of expert ophthalmologists from the Amulya Jyoti Eye Foundation conducted thorough examinations for 33 underprivileged individuals to identify vision impairments and eye health issues. During the camp, patients diagnosed with cataracts were identified for further medical intervention to prevent avoidable blindness. These individuals will now receive cataract surgeries at the Amulya Jyoti Eye Foundation completely free of cost as part of this ongoing service initiative.

Dr Partha Pratim Roy identified seven students with refractive errors requiring corrective lenses. High-quality spectacles were distributed to the seven identified students. The club sponsored the total cost of the frames and lenses as the families were unable to afford them. Correcting these visual impairments ensures the students can participate fully in classroom activities without strain.

Our Rotary Club of Calcutta Jadavpur (RCCJ) participated in the National Science Day program organised at the Nabin Manua Iswar Chandra High School in Daspur in the district of West Midnapore. The event included seminars, debates, and poster competitions focused on scientific awareness. Our member, Dr Chitra Mandal, addressed the students on health education and disease prevention. She specifically discussed measures to combat Thalassemia and shared insights on Cervical Cancer awareness. Her session focused on the responsibility of students in spreading health literacy within their communities. The program concluded with discussions on the history of Indian women in science and the importance of scientific thinking in daily life. A team from our club visited Jibanpur, near Berachampa, where our club member Dr. Asim Sil, tested the eyes of a family that is battling a severe hereditary strain of Glaucoma. Since the disease is genetic, the children of the family remain under the constant, vigilant monitoring of Dr Sil. His proactive approach ensures that at the slightest clinical sign of increased intraocular pressure, immediate intervention begins—effectively halting the progression of blindness before it starts. RCCJ continues to bridge the gap by covering all travel and logistical expenses, ensuring the family has access to the treatment.

We conducted a comprehensive Eye Check-up Camp to ensure the visual health of students of Class VIII. The camp was spearheaded by our club member PP Rtn. Dr. Partha Pratim Roy, supported by a skilled optometrist from his team. ​Around 35 students underwent thorough vision testing. The team identified cases of refractive errors and other common eye conditions. 7 students need glasses. Our club is planning to provide the glasses as they students wont be able to afford the glasses themselves.

The students learned the operational flow of the helpdesk, gaining insight into hospital-based social services. The SRABV students interacted warmly with the admitted children, exchanging greetings and spending quality time with them. Our Rotary Club of Calcutta Jadavpur participated in a school students’ science exhibition organised by the Sonarpur Book Fair Organising Committee, held at the Ardhendu Sekhar Bose Science Park, Sonarpur Club Samannay Samiti, Sonarpur Railway Colony. Around 25 students from different schools presented their scientific models and explained them to the best of their abilities. The enthusiasm and potential of the students were truly commendable. Our members served as judges for the exhibition. They asked several questions, most of which were answered confidently and thoughtfully by the students. Members of the club handed over mementoes and prizes to the winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions). By engaging with students in language and science, we continue to foster a generation that values both tradition and technological progress. In addition, RCCJ distributed food packets to the participating students.

Three members of RCCJ visited elderly people with Dementia at Sriti Sudhay, the Daycare Centre run by the Alzheimer’s & Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), Calcutta Chapter. We spent time with the inmates and participated in their ongoing therapy activities. The Secretary General of ARDSI, Calcutta Chapter, Nilanjana Maulik shared some of her interesting experiences. We discussed the possibility of taking the people with dementia to a pre-school run by our member Rtn. Pausali Paul to attend the Christmas celebration. As a token of compassion, we took some sweets and biscuits for the patients and caregivers. In order to abide by the guidelines maintained by ARDSI, only three members were allowed to visit at a time. This was a great experience for the members who visited the day care.

Goodies Distribution to Children Admitted At ICH

On the occasion of Independence Day, the Rotary Club of Calcutta Jadavpur carried out a service project at the Institute of Child Health. The primary goal was to bring a moment of joy to the children admitted to the hospital. A team of five club members distributed drawing books, colour boxes, and chocolates to 120 children. Ms Karobi De of the LBC (Life Beyond Cancer) team was also present to support the initiative. The children and their mothers were very happy to receive the gifts.

Goodies Distribution to Street Children at Udbhas

On August 15, 2025, the Rotary Club of Calcutta Jadavpur held a service project in response to an invitation from Udbhas Children Welfare Organization to celebrate Independence Day and bring joy to the children of the organisation. A group of seven club members attended the celebration at Udbhas. They participated in the formal flag hoisting ceremony and a cultural program, enjoying the performances by the children. Following the ceremony, members distributed pouch bags and chocolates to 70 children.

Clothes Distribution to Special Children at Srijon

RCCJ members had a heartwarming visit to Srijon Sova, a home for special children in Thakdari. The project aimed to provide clothes to the children. Club members collected, washed, and ironed a collection of clothes, which were then distributed to the children at Srijon Sova. The founder and their dedicated team shared insights into their journey and the childrens daily lives, which was an incredibly moving experience for everyone present. The visit was a humbling and impactful experience for our members and the members were grateful for the opportunity to support Srijon Sova.
